Volunteer Work Opportunities

Why Helping Others Can Help You

Volunteering at Hogar Miguel Magone has a meaningful impact on the village of El Aguacate as well as the economy and future of Guatemala. Do you realize that it can have additional benefits for you too?

You probably know that volunteer work helps you get into college. Colleges are not just looking for a list of clubs and years of involvement. They want to know what you actually did and what you learned in various experiences. Colleges want to see a well rounded person, one with diverse interests and experiences to insure you have what it takes to succeed in their college curriculum & the college environment.

Reasons to Volunteer

Gain Valuable Life Experiences and Skills

You'll experience living in a third world country through hands-on work. You’ll grow and learn many things. You’ll learn to appreciate your home… whatever part of the world it may be in. And you may decide that working with children is your career goal. You'll meet people with varied interests & backgrounds from many parts of the world. Volunteering brings together a variety of people from all walks of life and countries. The kids and staff of the home benefit from your volunteer efforts and fellow volunteers may just show you a new way of doing something. You may bond with some of the other volunteers and make lifelong friends.

Get Academic Credit

Schools may offer academic credit for volunteer work experiences. Check with your school for information.

Colleges will Notice You

Colleges pay attention to your life inside and outside the classroom. Your extracurricular activities reveal quite a bit about you…what your interests are, if you are an empathetic person, if you approach challenges, if you manage priorities and follow through on your commitments and how you've made a meaningful contribution to something. It's important that colleges see your dedication to one or two causes or activities that you really get involved with, rather than having hit or miss sporadic involvement.

And in addition….

Working at Hogar Miguel Magone Orphanage enables you to get more back that you can possibly give. You are giving back to children that have had a tough life, you will explore personal issues, make new friends, learn how to share with others and adapt to various situations, brush up on your Spanish language skills, get a little exercise walking the kids to school, you'll gain life lasting feelings of worth and self esteem and... You’ll have fun facing some of our challenges.

Come join us… You’ll be glad you did.
